Travel Basketball is a competitive, tryout-based program for players in 3rd through 6th grade who are ready for a higher level of basketball.
Travel basketball builds on the fundamentals taught throughout our programs while introducing players to a faster pace of play, stronger competition, and more advanced individual and team concepts. Our goal is to develop skilled, confident, competitive players while emphasizing teamwork, sportsmanship, effort, and representing Saucon Valley positively on and off the court.
Travel teams compete against other youth basketball programs throughout the Lehigh Valley and surrounding communities, including Southern Lehigh, Nazareth, Parkland, Phillipsburg, Catasauqua, Northwestern, Emmaus, Lehigh Township, and others.
Travel Divisions
SVYB typically offers travel opportunities for boys and girls in:
3rd Grade • 4th Grade
5th Grade • 6th Grade
The number of teams offered at each grade level depends on player interest, tryout participation, available coaches, and league placement.
Games & Travel
Travel teams play both home and away games against programs throughout the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas.
Game schedules are determined by the travel league and opposing organizations, so families should expect more variation in game times and locations than they may experience in our Recreation program.
Tryouts & Team Selection
Unlike Recreation Basketball, players must try out for a travel team and roster spots are not guaranteed.
Tryouts are held prior to the start of the season and are used to evaluate basketball skills, athletic ability, game awareness, effort, coachability, and overall readiness for competitive travel basketball.
Players should attend all scheduled tryout sessions whenever possible. Following evaluations, players selected for a team will be notified and provided with information about practices, schedules, and season expectations.
Travel team selection is based on the overall evaluation of each player and the needs of the team, not solely on a player's previous team placement or prior participation in the travel program.
Practices generally begin shortly after teams are selected, with teams typically practicing two times per week during the season. Games are played primarily on weekends, with occasional weekday games or additional basketball opportunities depending on the team's schedule.
Because travel teams have smaller rosters and compete at a higher level,
consistent attendance at practices and games is expected. Families should consider other winter sports and activity commitments before accepting a travel roster spot.

What is the expected commitment for Travel Basketball?
Travel Basketball requires a greater commitment. Players are expected to attend practices and games consistently and make their travel team a priority during the basketball season.

Where are Travel games played?
Travel teams play both home and away games against youth basketball programs throughout the Lehigh Valley and surrounding communities.
Opponents may include Southern Lehigh, Nazareth, Parkland, Phillipsburg, Catasauqua, Northwestern, Emmaus, Lehigh Township, and other area programs. Home games are played at Saucon Valley facilities, while away games are played at the opposing organization's gym.
How much playing time will my child receive?
Travel Basketball is a competitive program, and equal playing time is not guaranteed. Coaches determine playing time based on a variety of factors, including attendance, effort, game situations, player development, and team needs. Coaches are still expected to provide meaningful opportunities for players to develop and contribute throughout the season.
What happens if my child is not selected for a Travel team?
Players who are not selected for a Travel team will be notified and will automatically be placed on a Recreation team during rec team formations. Recreation provides continued opportunities to develop skills, gain game experience, compete, and prepare for future travel opportunities.
What is the difference between Recreation and Travel Basketball?
Recreation Basketball is open to players of varying experience and ability levels and focuses on development, balanced teams, meaningful participation, and competitive play.
Travel Basketball is tryout-based, roster spots are limited, and teams compete at a higher level against programs throughout the Lehigh Valley. Travel also requires a greater commitment to practices, games, and travel throughout the season.
Both programs emphasize player development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and a positive basketball experience.
Can I volunteer to coach a Travel team?
SVYB relies on volunteer coaches with basketball experience to lead our Travel teams. Individuals interested in coaching should indicate their interest during registration or contact SVYB. Travel coaching assignments are determined by SVYB and may include additional requirements due to the competitive nature of the program.
