Recreation: 3rd & 6th Grade Basketball

Develop. Compete. Have Fun.

SVYB’s 3rd–6th Grade Recreation Basketball program provides players of all experience levels an opportunity to continue developing their basketball skills in a fun, positive, and competitive environment.

Our recreation program focuses on fundamentals, teamwork, sportsmanship, confidence, and player development while giving kids the opportunity to experience organized league play. Whether a player is continuing from our younger program or picking up a basketball for the first time, recreation basketball is designed to provide a place to learn, compete, and enjoy the game.

Divisions

Separate boys and girls divisions are offered based on grade:

  • Boys 3rd & 4th Grade
  • Boys 5th & 6th Grade
  • Girls 3rd & 4th Grade
  • Girls 5th & 6th Grade

Teams are formed with the goal of creating balanced and competitive divisions so players and teams have a positive experience throughout the season.

Our Partnership with Southern Lehigh

SVYB partners with Southern Lehigh Youth Basketball to create a larger and stronger recreation league for both communities. The partnership allows Saucon Valley and Southern Lehigh teams to compete against one another while sharing gym and game resources.

Whenever possible, divisions are assigned a consistent primary game location to make the season easier for families and reduce confusion. In past seasons, for example, girls divisions have primarily played at Southern Lehigh while boys divisions have primarily played at Saucon Valley. Game locations and division assignments may vary from season to season based on registration numbers and gym availability.

What to Expect

The recreation season typically includes 2 weekday practices and Saturday games throughout the winter. Coaches are primarily volunteers from our community, and teams focus on developing individual skills while beginning to learn more advanced concepts such as spacing, passing and cutting, team defense, rebounding, and game awareness.

Our goal isn't simply to win games. We want players to improve throughout the season, contribute to their team, build confidence, compete appropriately, and leave wanting to play basketball again next year.

FAQs

  • Does my child need basketball experience?

No. Our Recreation Basketball program is open to players of all experience and skill levels. Whether your child has played for several years or is just getting started, the program focuses on developing basketball skills, teamwork, confidence, sportsmanship, and having fun in a competitive but supportive environment.

  • When are practices and games?

Teams practice twice per week on weekday evenings in practice time slots of 6-7pm, 7-8pm, and 8-9pm, with games played on Saturdays. Exact practice days and times are determined after teams are formed and depend on gym availability and volunteer coach schedules. Game schedules are provided before the season begins.

  • How are teams formed?

Players participate in an Rec open gym/evaluation in late October to help SVYB create teams that are as balanced and competitive as possible. These evaluations are different from Travel Team Tryouts.  These evaluation sessions are helpful so SVYB can distribute players fairly among teams based on skill and ability.

  • How are divisions formed?

Our Recreation program typically includes separate boys and girls divisions for 3rd/4th Grade and 5th/6th Grade. SVYB partners with Southern Lehigh Youth Basketball to provide a larger recreation league and additional competition. Final division structure may vary based on registration numbers each season.

  • What equipment does my child need?

Players should have appropriate basketball sneakers, bring a basketball, and water bottle to practices. Game uniforms and other team equipment are provided or coordinated through SVYB. Coaches will communicate any additional needs before practices begin.

  • Where are practices and games held?

SVYB teams practice at Saucon Valley School District facilities in either the Elementary School gym or Middle School gym. Through our partnership with Southern Lehigh Youth Basketball, games may be played at either Saucon Valley or Southern Lehigh facilities. Whenever possible, divisions are assigned a consistent primary game location to make scheduling easier for families and reduce confusion throughout the season.

  • Can I volunteer to coach?

Absolutely! Our Recreation program relies on parent and community volunteers to coach our teams. Basketball experience is helpful, but you do not need to be an expert to volunteer. SVYB provides coaches with league rules, resources, and support throughout the season. Anyone interested in coaching can indicate their interest during player registration or contact SVYB. Check out our Coaches Page for required clearances.

  • What is the difference between Recreation and Travel Basketball?

Recreation Basketball is open to players of all skill levels and does not require a tryout. Teams are balanced to provide fair competition, player development, and meaningful playing opportunities. Travel Basketball is a separate, tryout-based program designed for players seeking a higher level of competition and commitment.
