1st & 2nd Grade Basketball

Building Skills. Learning the Game. Having Fun.

At this age, development comes first. Our goal is to give every player plenty of opportunities to learn, play, and enjoy basketball while building a strong foundation for the years ahead.

This program's structure is flexible and depends on the number of players that register, the breakdown of boys and girls, and the availability of volunteer coaches. Each season may look a little different from year to year for this age group. Our goal is to create the best possible experience for players while adjusting to the needs of each year's group.

All teams and games for this age are inhouse, practicing 2x per week, on a modified court (SV Elementary School Cafeteria), with roll in baskets. Practices occur Monday through Friday between 6 and 8pm during the week with games on Saturdays. Please know your teams scheduled practice times of 6-7pm or 7-8pm rely heavily on coach availability and age of team.

FAQs

  • Does my child need basketball experience?

No. Our 1st & 2nd Grade program is designed for players of all experience levels, including children playing organized basketball for the first time. The focus is on learning fundamentals, developing confidence, teamwork, and having fun.

  • When are practices and games?

Teams typically practice twice per week, Monday through Friday. Practices are scheduled from 6-7pm or 7-8pm.  Games are played on Saturdays. Exact practice days and times depend on volunteer coach availability and will be communicated once teams are formed.

  • How are teams formed?

Players participate in an evaluation in early November to help SVYB create teams that are as balanced as possible. Evaluations are not tryouts and do not determine whether a player makes a team. They are simply used to distribute players fairly and create an enjoyable experience for everyone.

  • How are divisions formed?

The structure of the 1st & 2nd Grade program may vary each season based on registration numbers, the number of boys and girls registered, and available coaches. SVYB determines the format that will provide the best experience and most appropriate level of play for each group.

  • What equipment does my child need?

Players should wear sneakers, bring a water bottle, a size 5 basketball, and a smile!

  • Where are practices and games held?

Practices and games are held in the Saucon Valley Elementary School Cafeteria.

  • Can I volunteer to coach?

Yes! Our program relies heavily on parent and community volunteers. Basketball experience is helpful but not required. Check out our Coaches Page for required clearances. Check out our New Coach Guide.
